This case report describes a rare instance of primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the lung successfully treated with partial resection, with no recurrence at 9 months.
Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) commonly arises in the soft tissue of the extremities in adults. But primary MFH of the lung is very rare and 29 cases have been reported in the Japanese literature. This paper describes such as rare case of primary MFH in the left upper lobe of the lung in a 68-year-old man. On examination it was found that the tumor was located in the S3 area of the left lung with bullae, but any definite diagnosis was unable to be made. A patial resection of the left upper lobe was performed. Postoperative histologic and immunohistochemical examinations first offered the definite diagnosis of primary MFH of the lung. Histrogically the resected specimen revealed the typical striformed pattern of spindle cells. There has been no sign of recurrence, as of 9 months after the operation.
