Nonlocal potentials that give the same neutron-proton 3 S 1 - 3 D 1 phase parameters as the Reid hard-core potential are considered. It is shown that the deuteron quadrupole moment of 0.2770 fm 2 for the Reid model can be increased to the experimental value of 0.2860 fm 2 if the interaction has a repulsive nonlocal component. This nonlocal repulsion and that already found for the 1 S 0 p-p state are shown to be consistent with current models for the structure of the nucleon.
