Tubular albumen-secreting glands in the oviducts of the eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina) can serve as seminal receptacles. The glands containing spermatozoa are restricted to the caudal portion of the albumen region of the oviduct, and open to the lumen of the oviduct either via breaks in the overlying mucosal epithelium or through ducts formed by invaginations of the mucosal epithelium. Spermatozoa were identified in the seminal receptacles of females isolated from males for varying periods up to 14 months.
