The swelling course of corneal epithelium in response to an oxygen-free atmosphere was quantified histologically, using both frozen section and paraffin-embedding techniques. Epithelial swelling rates of approximately 20% per hour over the first two hours were found for both series, changes during that period being localized primarily in the superficial cell layers.
