On the basis of clinical observations (1-3) it has been suggested that malnutrition may play an important etiological role in "alcoholic" cirrhosis, since the patients generally are malnourished, and since hepatic functions improve when patients are fed a nutritious diet and are deprived of alcohol. There is evidence that the ingestion of alcohol increases nutritional imbalance by providing calories without essential nutrients. Such a mechanism has been postulated as the...References1.
