A new activator was proposed to evaluate the susceptibility of type 304L stainless steel to intergranular corrosion using the electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR) technique. Thioacetamide (CH3CSNH2) was shown to be more suitable as an activator than other compounds containing sulfur. The influence of CH3CSNH2 concentration, potentiodynamic scanning rate, and vertex potential on the evaluating parameter (ratio of the maximum reactivation current to the maximum anodic current) was investigated. The mechanism of CH3CSNH2 as an activator for the EPR test was discussed.
