A porous, hydrophilic monolith was produced from an emulsion-templated, porous, hydrophobic monolith that was synthesized through the polymerization of t-butyl acrylate in the external phase of a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE). The hydrolysis of the t-butyl groups to carboxylic acid groups resulted in a significant enhancement in wetting by water. Although the as-synthesized hydrophobic polyHIPE did not absorb water, the hydrolyzed polyHIPE rapidly absorbed nearly 700 wt %.
