The application of SEM based automatic image analysis to the determination of the volume fraction, size distribution, shape, and chemical composition of non-metallic inclusions in steel weld metals is described. Both carbon extraction replicas and mechanically polished specimens are used to obtain reliable data which, in turn, can serve as a basis for future theoretical treatments of weld metal microstructure development.MST/750
