One major requirement for a hematopoietic cell culture system is that cell cultivation be controlled. The control and regulation of the pO2 and the pH value which greatly influence the differentiation of hematopoietic cells are of special importance. Two novel bioreactors are presented: a stirred system for the stroma-free suspension culture and a fixed-bed reactor for the immobilized coculture of stromal and hematopoietic cells on porous microcarriers. Both production systems have a process control. For comparative studies on a small scale miniaturized systems were developed.
