The surfaces of phosphors added with for vacuum fluorescent displays (VFD's) have been studied by x‐ray diffraction, SEM, and Auger electron spectroscopy with emphasis on the effect of the grinding and baking processes upon nonuniform strain, decomposition, and oxidation. It is found that these phenomena affect the properties of low voltage cathodoluminescence used for VFD's.
