Mixed alkaline earth-based, rare earth-doped nitride phosphors, (Sr,Ca)AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ , were synthesized from metal hydride powders as raw materials under atmospheric-pressure heating conditions. The resultant phosphors were almost free from impurity phase and well crystallized by using CaH 2 as a flux. An intense red emission band peaking at about 644 nm was observed on (Sr 0.42 Ca 0.56 )AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ and the peak position was shifted at the shorter wavelength side by increasing the Sr content than that of CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ .
