The passivation of a zinc electrode has been studied both by galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods in boric acid-sodium hydroxide buffer solutions. After addition of chloride ion, the characteristics of pitting corrosion have been investigated. The results indicate that pits form only on a passive surface and that the pitting potentials are a function of applied current density. The galvanostatic method is more convenient when large numbers of specimens are involved and the scatter is less than with the potentiostatic method.
