Does the introduction of desflurane improve awakening time and operating room efficiency in patients undergoing general anesthesia?
The use of desflurane in general anesthesia significantly shortens awakening time and improves operating room efficiency, facilitating day surgery.

May shorten awakening times with desflurane; leaves open confirmation of OR efficiency gains in randomized trials.

Mitsumasa MATSUDA (2016) conducted an observational in General anesthesia (n=807). Desflurane availability (2015 period) vs. Historical periods before desflurane availability (2000 and 2010) was evaluated on Awakening time (minutes) (p=<0.01). The introduction of desflurane significantly reduced mean awakening time to 10 minutes in 2015 compared to 14-16 minutes in historical cohorts, and shortened PACU stay times (p<0.01).
