The effects of impurities in high temperature water has been examined on sensitized 304 stainless steel under both constant temperature and transient temperature conditions. As-welded, low temperature sensitized and furnace sensitized 304 has been studied under two conditions of potential control: by variable additions of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide in pure and impure water; and by potentiostat in a deaerated supporting electrolyte. Results have shown that impurity additions and transient temperature testing accelerate intergranular stress corrosion cracking, and that testing in supporting electrolytes often yields misleading results.
