The development of proliferous (“bottle brush”) forms of Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Link has been studied in relation to salinity changes and also in media of extreme salinity. Two distinct patterns of development may produce similar morphologies; (A) the in situ germination of swarmers and (B) outgrowths from isolated, swollen cells present in the thallus. “Bottle brush” morphogenesis may be initiated by salinity changes and also by prolonged immersion in media of extreme salinity.
