The essential oil was isolated by hydrodistillation of Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour) Spring. dried leaves from Archipelago of Comoros. The oil was analyzed by capillary GC and GC-MS. Carvacrol (23.0 %), camphor (22.2 %), Δ-3-carene (15.0 %), λ-terpinene (8.4 %), O-cymene (7.7 %) and α-terpinene (4.8 %) were the major constituents of the oil. The antibacterial activity of P. amboinicus (Lour.) Spring. leaves essential oil was investigated using agar gel diffusion. The results obtained showed that the essential oil of P. amboinicus (Lour.) Spring. exhibited more antibacterial activity on positive Gram (+) (Staphylococcus aureus) than on negative Gram (-) (Escherichia coli). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 0.2 % and 0.1 % for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively.
