The design of a 155-Mb/s burst-mode receiver for asynchronous transfer mode passive optical network is described. The receiver employs differentiation with dynamic threshold adjustment to achieve fast response without the need of a reset signal. Fabricated in a 45-GHz f/sub t/ SiGe process, the chip achieves 26-dB dynamic range, -31-dBm sensitivity, consumes 310 mW from a 3.3-V supply, and occupies 1/spl times/1 mm/sup 2/.
