The antiferroelectric phase transition in KSCN can be described by a compressible Ising model with four pseudospins per unit cell. A model Hamiltonian has been constructed, and the stability of the various possible low-temperature phases as well as the static and dynamic behavior of this system have been analyzed. A comparison with experiments shows that the energy of the elastic coupling is about one-half the energy due to dipole-dipole interactions.
