Recent work exploring whether the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) causes malignancies in man has centered mainly on nucleic acid hybridization studies to document the presence of the EBV genome in apparently virus-free neoplastic tissue. Although Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is still of prime interest, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is now also receiving special attention because, for the first time with this widely distributed neoplasm, it has become possible to demonstrate the EBV genome in malignant tissue from patients in several parts of the world and not only in Kenya.
