Typical experimental techniques and results are presented to characterize properties of solid electrolytes with particular emphasis on their different surfaces and interfaces which determine electrode processes in sensor and fuel cell applications. Experimental results are discussed of electronic structures and chemical compositions at reversible electrode/electrolyte interfaces of the “prototype material” yttria‐stabilized zirconia.
