A new formula is derived for computation of surface wave magnitudes from short period (8–14 s) Rg-type continental Rayleigh waves which yields magnitudes which are effectively independent of distance in the range from 4° to 45°. Retaining a distance correction of the form a log Δ, the value of a for the short period waves is in the range 0.7 to 0.8, contrast to the value of 1.66 appropriate to 20-second waves in the IASPEI formula.
