Communicating the clinical significance of cytologic findings is a vital function of any cytology report. The simplicity and reproducibility of risk of malignancy (ROM), along with the wealth of accumulated data surrounding its use, mean that ROM remains the gold standard for measuring risk in thyroid fine‐needle aspiration specimens, one that is easily understood and has been found to be useful by cytologists, molecular pathologists, clinicians, and patients.
