Copolymers of vinyl chloride with isopropenyl chloride were used to prove the possibility of determining the contents of chlorine bound to the tertiary carbon atom (ClT) both by infrared spectra in the region of C—Cl stretching vibrations, and by a specific phenolytic reaction. Samples of PVC were prepared bymethods which, according to literature, should lead to highly branched polymers. We were not able to find any ClT in these samples by the above methods, even though their sensitivity was several times higher than the expected degree of branching.
