The formula for the correlation factor in tracer diffusion has been derived by a simple and elementary calculation in the case where the diffusion takes place by ions jumping alternately between two kinds of site with equal spacing. The correlation factors for the vacancy and interstitial mechanisms are deduced from this formula. The formula has been applied to alpha -Ag 2 Te in which Ag ions diffuse by changing alternately between octahedral sites and tetrahedral sites in the anion FCC sublattice.
