An all optical fiber, intensity modulated sensor for discrete liquid level sensing is presented. The highly sensitive and robust design requires only silica fibers, an optical source and a detector. The sensor probe is prepared by etching the silica fibers using hydrofluoric acid. Experiments conducted with water confirm the ability of the sensor to detect liquid level variation below 10 μm.
