The electrochemistry of the ions of zinc, cadmium, and mercury in the AlCl3–NaCl–KCl eutectic at 150 °C was investigated by e.m.f., voltammetric, and chronopotentiometric techniques. Oxidation states of +2 were observed for these three elements and oxidation states of +1 were observed for cadmium and mercury. Values of equilibrium constants for the reactions [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] were calculated to be 26 and 36 000 respectively. A standard potential scale for the Zn(II)/Zn, Hg(II)/Hg(I), Hg(I)/Hg(0), Ag(I)/Ag(0), and Al(III)/Al(0) couples was established in the solvent system AlCl3–NaCl–KCl.
