ELETTRA is a new ultrahigh-brightness VUV/soft x-ray synchrotron radiation facility under construction by Sincrotrone Trieste in Italy. The main features of the project and its status are described. Details of the expected properties of the different types of radiation source are presented, and initial studies of insertion device and beamline components are summarized.
