A new viologen gold iodide, (C12H14N2)Au2I4, has been prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography and vibrational spectroscopy. The crystal structure features linear equidistant gold chains with Au−Au distances of 3.3767(3) Å. The interactions within the anionic “crossed-sticks” [AuI2-]∞ chains are dominated by closed-shell “aurophilic” interactions between Au(I) atoms. The low-frequency Raman and IR spectra of the compound are reported and interpreted on the basis of the group theoretical analysis of the long-wavelength optical phonons.
