This article focuses on the development of miniaturized PEM fuel cells for portable applications. The membrane-electrode assembly is prepared with sputtered electrodes and catalyst layers, and plasma-polymerized electrolyte membranes. These thin films have the ability to be deposited on different kinds of substrates, such as silicon, porous ceramics or flexible foils, which enables various arrangements for miniaturized fuel cells. Two different fuel cell concepts are described in detail, and the characteristics of initial systems are presented.
