The asymmetry parameter beta of photoelectrons ejected from the 2s shell of carbon have been calculated for three carbon ionic states, 4 P e , 2 D e and 2 S e . The large departures from the Cooper-Zare value of 2 in each case can be understood systematically in the angular momentum transfer theory of Dill and Fano.
