The relationship between initial condition and long time evolution observed by Yuen and Ferguson for the one-space dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been extended to two-space dimensions. In the case where the instability region is infinite in extent, it is found that the energy initially contained in low modes can leak to unstable higher harmonics in a quasi-recurring fashion.
