The history of Australia’s large earthquakes and tectonic setting is summarised to impress on engineers the need for earthquake loads to be considered in the design and construction of structures in Australia. Special consideration should be given to retrofitting all existing schools and hospitals. The lack of Australian strong motion data leads to conservative loading factors and this will only be remedied when an appropriate accelerograph network is installed throughout the country, akin to the meteorological monitoring network.
