Krebs & Eggleston (1948) reported that minced sheep-heart muscle, when suspended in a saline medium, reduced acetoacetate to B-hydroxybutyrate more rapidly under aerobic than under anaerobic conditions. It is somewhat unexpected that oxygen should promote a reduction and the present investigation was undertaken to throw light on the mechanism by which this effect of oxygen is brought about.
