A disposable chemical oxygen demand (COD) sensor was constructed using a microfabricated Clark-type oxygen electrode and titanium dioxide (TiO2) fine particles suspended in a sample solution. Under UV irradiation, a decrease in the dissolved oxygen in the sample was correlated to COD, a parameter representing the organic concentration of the sample. The sensor performance was evaluated using artificial and real water samples from lakes in Japan. The response time of the sensor was approximately 3–4 minutes with a detection limit of 0.118 ppm.
