A strain of pea seed‐borne mosaic virus isolated from the field pea cultivar ‘Pamaro’ and designated PSbMV‐Pam was unable to infect pea cultivars homozygous for the mo gene which confers resistance to bean yellow mosaic virus. PSbMV‐Pam was efficiently transmitted by Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer), but poorly by Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach). Using an international set of Pisum sativum L. differential hosts, PSbMV‐Pam was shown to resemble both a Dutch isolate and a lentil strain of PSbMV from the United States, but, in most instances, produced milder symptoms. PSbMV‐Pam could be distinguished from an isolate from the pea cultivar ‘Small Sieve Freezer’ by means of direct ELISA but not by indirect assay.
