When a metallic solid is strained below its elasticity limit, in any locally dilated zone two competitive effects take place: thermoelastic cooling and heating due to internal friction phenomena. During an adiabatic tensile test, a measure of the critical strain rate at which the two effects balance allows for the determination of both the longitudinal viscosity coefficient and the related relaxation time.
