Evidence for a low-molecular-weight collagen precursor.

In this communication evidence is presented that collagen-proline hydroxylation occurs on polypeptides of low molecular weight. Thus, the hydroxylation process is initiated prior to the completion of the synthesis of collagen α-chains. present data rule out the participation of any proteolytic enzymes in obtaining low-molecular-weight polypeptides containing hydroxyproline.
