The 1,3-dideazapurine (benzimidazole) residue occurs in a wide range of biologically active compounds, many of which are also metal-ion dependent in their action. In this study it is shown that log K versus pKa plots (complex stability versus protonated-ligand acidity) for several benzimidazoles (shown here) result in straight lines. These data permit calculation of stability constants, provided the pKa values are known, for complexes formed between benzimidazole derivatives and alkaline earth ions or divalent ions of the 3d series including Zn2+ and Cd2+.
