The magnetic properties of the compound NdZn were studied by neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements. The compound NdZn has the cubic CsCl structure with a=3.666+or-0.001 AA. The paramagnetic Curie temperature is theta p =30K. A paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition occurs at T N =66K. At 4.2K NdZn has an antiferromagnetic structure with ferromagnetic planes parallel to (100) in which the moment directions are perpendicular to these planes and alternate with those in neighbouring planes. The moment of the Nd atoms is strongly reduced (2.52 mu B ). The magnetic properties of the compound NdZn sharply contrast with the properties of the heavy rare earth counterparts of the same crystal structure. Implications of the experimental data on the validity of the RKKY approach are discussed.
