The doffer and flats both play important rôles in carding on the revolving-flat card. Whereas the doffer action expressed in terms of its collecting power has been explained by studies on the recycling of fibres on the cylinder, the action of flats has not been so clearly defined. In the investigation described in this paper, an attempt is made to analyse the rôles of doffer and flats separately. It is shown that the action of the flats can be expressed quantitatively and that it has a greater influence on the quality of carding than that of the doffer alone.
