Samples taken from the proximal end and 10 cm below the proximal end, of adventitious roots of mature Sasa palmata plants, were investigated using the scanning electron microscope and electron-probe microanalyzer.High levels of silicon were confined to the endodermis. It was present within the inner and outer tangential walls, and also the radial walls. The results are discussed in relation to the anatomy of the tissues, and the possible functions of silicification.
