An ecto-ATPase activity was demonstrated for the first time at the outer surface of bovine lens epithelial cells. The enzyme needs Mg2+ or Ca2+. It is clearly discernible from the Mg-Na-K-ATPase. It is present in relatively high activities at the surface of cells from older animals and drops down to very low levels if the cells grow mitotically in culture.
