The sediments of the Pakaurangi Formation are fossiliferous and range from immature lithic labradorite‐feldsarenites to immature volcarenites. They were probably derived from both andesitic volcanic and earlier sedimentary rocks. The Puketi Formation consists of immature volcarenites derived almost entirely from a nearby andesitic source. The sedimentary structures are in accord with shallow marine deposition in the Pakaurangi Formation, and terrestrial and very shallow water non‐marine deposition in the Puketi Formation. Current directional features, grain‐size parameters, trace fossils, and accessory and authigenic minerals were also studied to enable provenance and environmental deductions to be made.
