A review of the literature on pregnancy indicates that there is a predictable and uniform psychological process associated with the experience for both expectant parents. Specific developmental tasks for both expectant mothers and fathers are identified. It is suggested that the manner with which prospective parents handle the pregnancy will impact on post-partum adjustment and involvement with their infants. Providing mental health services during pregnancy would meet emotional needs during pregnancy and enhance the quality of family life and infant care.
