Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto poly(vinyl alcohol) was carried out by the ceric ion method. The graft copolymers were separated from the reaction products by acetylation of the poly(vinyl alcohol) component. The graft copolymers obtained were characterized by oxidative degradation of the poly(vinyl alcohol) backbone, and were found to be predominantly block‐type copolymers.
