This protocol outlines a planned Cochrane Review to assess whether statins reduce major vascular events in patients with elevated blood pressure.
This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows: Primary Objective To determine if statins, as compared to placebo or no treatment, reduce major vascular endpoints (such as total and cardiovascular mortality, stroke and myocardial infarction) in patients with elevated blood pressure. Secondary Objectives To determine the magnitude of the effect of statins on systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with elevated blood pressure. To determine the magnitude of the effect of statin on plasma lipids (total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides) in patients with elevated blood pressure. To determine the rate of withdrawal due to adverse effects with statins as compared to placebo or no treatment in patients with elevated blood pressure.

Rosito et al. (2010) conducted a systematic review in Hypertension. Statins vs. Placebo or no treatment was evaluated on Major vascular endpoints (such as total and cardiovascular mortality, stroke and myocardial infarction). This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review to evaluate whether statins reduce major vascular endpoints compared to placebo or no treatment in patients with elevated blood pressure.
