The water uptake of potato tuber tissue under the influence of chloramphenicol and actinomycin D was compared with that of indoleacetic acid. Both antibiotics decreased the water absorption as compared to the effect of indoleacetic acid. This decrease, in the early hours (3 to 6 h), is due to diminished water permeability. In the later period (6 to 48 h), it is instead a result of a reduction in wall extensibility.
