Experiments have been carried out to investigate, by means of picosecond mode locked laser pulses, the performance of the fast vacuum photoelectric cells associated with a high sensitivity, high speed cathode ray tube provided with a channel plate electron multiplier. An overall time response of less than 100 ps has been measured with an amplitude sensitivity of 140 mV cm -1 .
