Conceptual analysis explores definitions of self and reality in person-centred counselling, suggesting fundamental revisions to humanistic therapeutic models.
Over the past three years, my thinking about the social context of person-centred counselling has been heavily influenced by questions about the nature of ‘reality’ and the concept of ‘self’. These questions, and the influences to which | have opened myself in order to begin to answer them, have led to a recognition that I might well also need to question what | mean by the ‘person’ - a term that I had hitherto never seen fit to challenge - if I am to address the full complexity of what it means to be alive as a human being and to continue to work within the person-centred approach.
