Observational study uncovers inflammatory protein and immune cell changes following sensor-detected hypoglycemia in diabetes, highlighting a potential biological link to cardiovascular risk.
Introduction Hypoglycemia is the most common complication of insulin treatment in people with diabetes. Adults with type 1 diabetes experience approximately two self-treated hypoglycemic episodes per week and annually one severe episode, defined as an event requiring external assistance because of cognitive decline 1. Insulin-treated adults with type 2 diabetes have been reported to experience up to two hypoglycemic episodes per month and up to two severe hypoglycemic episodes per year 2,3. Hypoglycemia may cause immediate harm, but has also been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, the underlying mechanism of which remaining elusive 4-13.
